Water Well Drilling
Water well drilling is the heart of our business. Roughly one in five people in Ireland rely on a private water supply — yet a recent EPA study found E. coli in almost a third of private wells. From private households to group water schemes and public supplies, we deliver every stage of a properly constructed, safe borehole, built to EPA and IGI guidelines.
Feasibility & Design
Hydrogeological assessment and well siting, with borehole designs to IGI Water Well Guidelines and EPA Advice Note 14 — ensuring a sustainable, protected source before a rig ever arrives.
Drilling & Construction
Boreholes drilled from 100mm to 650mm diameter for private, agricultural, commercial, and public supplies — properly cased, grouted, and sealed to protect your groundwater from surface contamination.
Yield & Water Quality Testing
Hydrogeological assessment and well siting, with borehole designs to IGI Water Well Guidelines and EPA Advice Note 14 — ensuring a sustainable, protected source before a rig ever arrives.
CCTV Surveying
Downhole camera surveys to inspect casing, screens, and water strikes — diagnosing biofouling, encrustation, and structural issues before they become costly failures.
Remediation & Rehabilitation
Well cleaning and redevelopment using chemical treatment, brushing, jetting, airlifting, and eductor systems — restoring lost yield and water quality in ageing boreholes.
Yield & Water Quality Testing
Safe, compliant sealing of redundant boreholes to prevent contamination pathways into the aquifer — with full documentation for landowners and regulators.
What to Expect
From your first call to a working water supply, here's how a new well comes together.
01
Enquiry & Site Visit
We talk through what you need the water for, then visit to look at the ground and check access for the rig.
02
Feasibility & Siting
We assess the local geology and choose the best spot for the well. If you're applying for a Well Grant, we'll advise on the paperwork.
03
Enquiry & Site Visit
The borehole is drilled, cased, grouted and sealed to EPA and IGI guidelines. Ground mats are used where needed to protect your land.
Typically 1–3 days on site
04
Testing & Handover
We test the yield of the well and can arrange water quality sampling through an accredited laboratory.
05
Pump & Connection
We don't supply or fit pumps. We recommend using a third-party pump installer to fit the pump and connect your supply.
💧Well Grants of up to €5,000 Available
Householders in Ireland relying on a private water supply can apply to their local authority for a Well Grant covering 85% of costs up to €5,000 for a new well, up to €3,000 for well rehabilitation, and 100% up to €1,000 for water quality treatment.
We're happy to advise on eligibility and provide the documentation you need for your application. Learn more about the Well Grant Scheme →
Client Reviews
We used Geodrilling for a domestic well in our new build and they are a wonderful company to work with. Niall and Aine were very helpful and obliging with any questions we had. The drilling rig was much smaller than we expected and non disruptive to other trades on site. Ben kept me updated on their progress throughout and left the site neat afterwards. Recommend.

Water Well Drilling FAQs
Answers to the questions we're asked most often by households, farms and businesses considering a private water supply.
How much does it cost to drill a water well in Ireland or Northern Ireland?
Your content goes here. Edit or remove this text inline or in the module Content settings. You can also style every aspect of this content in the module Design settings and even apply custom CSS to this text in the module Advanced settings.
How deep does a borehole need to be drilled?
It depends entirely on the local geology and the aquifer beneath your site. We carry out a hydrogeological assessment and well siting study — designed to IGI Water Well Guidelines and EPA Advice Note 14 — before drilling begins, so the depth is based on evidence rather than guesswork.
What diameter is a typical water well borehole?
We drill boreholes from 100mm up to 650mm in diameter, sized to suit private, agricultural, commercial or public supply requirements.
Is water from a private well in Ireland safe to drink?
Not automatically — an EPA study found E. coli in almost a third of private wells tested. We recommend yield and water quality testing through an accredited laboratory, both when a well is first constructed and periodically afterwards.
How long does it take to drill a water well?
Drilling usually takes between one and three days on site, depending on the ground conditions and how deep the well needs to go. We'll give you a clearer idea after the site visit.
Will the drilling rig damage my land?
We check access during the site visit and plan the job to keep disturbance to a minimum. Where the ground is soft or needs protecting, we use ground mats under the rig and vehicles.
Do you supply and fit the pump?
No. Our work covers the design, drilling, construction and testing of the well. We recommend using a third-party pump installer to supply and fit the pump and connect it to your house or farm.
Do I need planning permission to drill a borehole?
Requirements vary depending on your location and the intended use of the water. Get in touch and we'll confirm what applies to your project as part of the feasibility stage.
What areas does Geo Drilling Solutions cover?
We operate from two locations — Castlebellingham, Co. Louth in the Republic of Ireland and Newry, Co. Down in Northern Ireland — and carry out water well and geothermal drilling projects throughout Ireland, Northern Ireland and the wider UK.
